There's something about Halloween that makes me feel like a kid again. As a child growing up in the Philippines, Halloween wasn't something we celebrated as a family. This day falls right before All Saint's Day & All Souls Day, which are solemn religious holidays generally observed by Filipino Catholics. We were supposed to pray and visit the cemeteries and remember all our loved ones who passed on. And that's what we did around this time of year. Prayed and visited cemeteries. Hmm..solemn but not so fun!
Then when we moved to Canada, we adopted the "Western" style tradition of Halloween. I was 15 years old and of course, I felt I was too old to go trick or treating. My younger siblings, though, did all the cool things like dress up in costumes and carve pumpkins. It wasn't until 3 years ago, when I first had Claire, that I really got into the Halloween spirit. Last night, I spent 3 hours carving 2 pumpkins -- 3 hours! Yep, I had a stencil and carved a couple of intricate designs. I was definitely channeling the inner Martha -- hahaha! Or maybe I was catching up with cool things I missed as a child. Vince also carved his own pumpkin, while Claire coloured some mini pumpkins (see photo above).
Anyhow, the weather looks great tonight. And we'll be trick or treating. Yay! Claire will be dressed up as a cute witch, and I'll be dressed as the paparazzi mother. *lol*
Happy Halloween!!
